UN-SPIDER news update

There are two upcoming meetings that the UN-SPIDER Team would like to make you aware of as they provide opportunities for closer coordination and for building synergies.

The first is the Map World Forum to be held in Hyderabad, India, from 10-13 February 2009. UN-SPIDER is an Institutional Partner to the Forum. UN-SPIDER Senior Expert Mr. Jörg Szarzynski will attend as a speaker within the seminar on "Coastal Zone Mapping for Disaster Management".

Also, at exhibition booth no. 76 Mr. Szarzynski will present the mission and activities of the UN-SPIDER programme, and the United Nations Geographic Information Working Group (UNGIWG) co-chaired by UNOOSA and UNECA for the period 2009 - 2010.

If you will be attending the Map World Forum please do let Mr. Szarzynski know so you can plan a possible meeting on the sideline.

The second meeting is the Forty-sixth session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space which will also discuss the 2008-2009 UN-SPIDER activities and the Plan of Work for
2010-2011 under agenda item 8. Space-system-based disaster management support. If you will be attending this Subcommittee meeting as part of a delegation from your country or organisation please do let the Team know so they can forward you specific information on UN-SPIDER.

Regarding UN-SPIDER, we are fine tuning the 2009 Plan of Work. Please do inform us on any specific activities which your organisation or institution will be carrying out in 2009 that we could coordinate with. Please send this information to Mr. Georg Magerl (georg.magerl@unoosa.org).
