The Hong Kong Maritime Department has confirmed that all United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) digital nautical publications may be used to meet carriage requirements.
The UKHO sought clarification from the Hong Kong authorities after having several enquiries from shipping companies and distributors asking whether or not their digital nautical publications could be used as a replacement for equivalent paper products onboard Hong Kong registered vessels.
In response the Hong Kong Marine Department recently issued a notice to all ship managers and recognised classification societies confirming that digital nautical publications as well as paper products may be used to fulfil the requirements of Chapter V of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Regulations for the carriage of navigational charts and publications. The notice also sets out additional requirements to ensure safe use of digital publications.
Chris Smith, UKHO International Relations Coordinator, said: “Admiralty Digital Publications have already been accepted by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and several other Administrations such as Norway, The Netherlands and Greece as being equivalent to Admiralty paper publications and therefore as meeting the SOLAS carriage requirement for their vessels.
“Admiralty digital nautical publications greatly assist the mariner not only by providing the necessary information quickly and in a user-friendly way, but also by minimising the amount of correctional work that is required to maintain them.”
UKHO currently produces digital versions of Admiralty Tide Tables (Admiralty TotalTide), Lights List (ADLL) and Admiralty Digital List of Radio Signals Vol 6 (ADRS Vol 6).
Each publication offers the mariner official data from an authorised hydrographic office and the ability to update their publications by CD, via email or by internet download, thus relieving them of the requirement for manual updates.
Data within each product is protected from corruption and the updating process is guaranteed by thorough integrity-checking.
