Brussels, Belgium, 27 November 2009 - TomTom, the world’s leading provider of portable navigation solutions and digital maps, today announces that CIO Christiaan De Backer was awarded CIO of the Year by Data News, a Belgian magazine for ICT Professionals.
De Backer was a finalist for the award along with industry peers Erik Cuypers, CIO at Thomas Cook, and Bart Sijnave, CIO at Universitair Ziekenhuis Gent. He was selected as the annual recipient by a grand jury, which included representatives from the academic world, the business world and the Data News editorial team.
As CIO of TomTom, De Backer is responsible for the company’s IT organization, which encompasses 120 people across nine countries. With more than 25 years of experience in telecommunications and IT management industry, Christiaan has also served as Vice President of Global IT of TomTom subsidiary Tele Atlas and has held senior IT positions at Alcatel Bell Telephone and Belgacom. De Backer holds an MBA in Business Engineering from Gent University (the RUG).
