The end of the road for breakdowns with Driver DNA

Prognosis technology provides an ‘early warning system’ for drivers.

We’ve all been there, stuck outside the house on a freezing morning, waiting for the breakdown services to arrive and recharge our car battery.

But Trimble, leaders in Mobile Resource Management, says winter breakdowns will soon be a thing of the past with new predictive technology telling drivers when their vehicles are about to fail.

“People will no longer have to wait in the cold for someone to come and fix their vehicles as breakdowns will be prevented from happening in the first place,” says Andrew Yeoman, MD of Trimble MRM.

Trimble already provides its GPS tracking box, dubbed ‘Driver DNA’, to commercial fleets including British Gas and British Telecom. The box records information about the vehicle’s location, condition and the way it is being driven.

Driver DNA also measures battery voltage to predict a failure or non-start and advises customers via a text message or email alert. In 2010, prognostics technology will be available to analyse all problems and predict a failure earlier than the driver or even the vehicle itself.

Fleet bosses are already benefiting from Trimble’s technology, including work scheduling and tracking, which is good news for customers expecting deliveries or urgent repairs.

“Keeping a vehicle on the road is the most important thing for our customers running fleets and being able to mitigate vehicle breakdowns is imperative,” says Yeoman.

“We are proud to produce cutting-edge technology that will benefit businesses and the public.”
