SuperGeo Develops Biodiversity GIS

SuperGeo Develops Biodiversity GIS

SuperGeo Technologies establishes Biodiversity Geographic Information System that enables users to query, display, share, and manage various wild life data. The system can achieve the goal of central management, distributed applications, and data sharing. The availability of the species research data can be enhanced, too.

Endemic Species Research Institute is the top government agency to research wild flora and fauna in Taiwan. To improve the interoperability and sharing between the databases of the Institute and other research units and schools, the Institute intended to apply WebGIS technologies to develop a system which meets international standards and integrates several databases, such as Taiwan Wildlife Database, Ecological Engineering Method Database, and Freshwater Fish Database.

Therefore, Biodiversity Geographic Information System, a WebGIS platform including multiple databases and providing data display and query, is developed by SuperGeo Technologies, allowing users to use Internet browsers to manipulate the functions and query the data.

The web geographic information system adopts SuperWebGIS, the Internet Map Server Software developed by SuperGeo Technologies, as the map server of the system to publish maps and WMS services as well as provide various GIS manipulations. Users can utilize the aforementioned supported browsers to view, query, add, and manage the species data easily.

Biodiversity Geographic Information System greatly facilitates Endemic Species Research Institute to understand the time and spatial distribution of species. Also, the advantages of the system, like the intelligent query functions, species distribution map service, easy-to-use interface, less waiting time, etc., can also increase users’ willingness to use the system.

According to the Institute, more and more people are also attracted to devote to preserving biodiversity in Taiwan. The successful experience could also be applied by other countries to protecting the wild life and improving data management.
