SuperGeo Applies GIS to Historical Materials

SuperGeo Applies GIS to Historical Materials

SuperGeo Technologies develops ‘Historical Material Geographic Information System’ for Academia Historica. The system adopts SuperWebGIS as the map server platform to publish rich historical and geographic data on the Internet as important spatial references for historical and cultural research.

As the highest authority of history in Taiwan, Academia Historica collects, organizes, stores, edits, and studies the modern history in Taiwan. Academia Historica has collected rich historical materials that can be seen as the important references for modern research in history, culture and academic education.

Academia Historica planned to utilize WebGIS technology to integrate digital archive databases and publish the stored historical materials on the Web. Therefore, the public can access the modern history easily through browsers and query historical materials via the Internet in an interactive way.

Users can choose the time order and employ GIS to overlay the historical materials, and the materials can be displayed with temporal and spatial dimensions. As a result, people can understand the process and conditions in the history more clearly.

The system adopts SuperWebGIS as the map server platform to publish historical and geographic data as the map services on the Internet. Users can use the browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari, to access rich data without installing any other plug-ins. Maps are displayed clearly in full window so that users can focus on the map easily.

The functions of Historical Material GIS include Layer Manipulation, Map Position, Historical Data Query, Layer Control, and lastly Print.

With Historical Material GIS, abundant historical materials can be published to the Internet as the map services through WebGIS technologies. Users can use browsers to clearly know the modern history events and recognize the geographic differences between ancient and modern time. Meanwhile, the system provides an effective way for domestic and international researchers to study history.
