RDC ScanEx acquired a series of new images from Radarsat-1 satellite for the water area of the southern part of the Azov Sea and the Kerch Strait. Images, acquired on November 22 and 23 (fig. 1 and 2 respecctively) with 30 m resolution show dark spots in the northern part of the the Kerch Strait with no clear margins or origin..
Fig 3. illustrates the overall image of the northern part of the Black Sea, the Kerch Strait and the southern part of the Azov Sea, acquired in ScanSAR mode from Radarsat-1 satellite on November 23.
A few days ago radar images of the Kerch Strait oil spills were posted in ScanEx’s web-site in free access mode as of November 15 and 16. Hydrocarbons pollution of the sea surface occurred as a result of the sever storm on November 11, when Volgoneft-139 tanker with 4000 tons of fuel oil took the bottom and broke apart.
Since summer 2007, "ScanEx" and NGO "Transparent World" has been doing satellite-based radar monitoring of the water area of the northern part of the Caspian Sea for oil spills. Monitoring is carried out based on the Radarsat-1 and Envisat-1 satellite radar data. The information is free to access and is available on the special geoportal. The project is described on ScanEx’s web-site.
