Satellite Navigation Centre Multi-GNSS Technology

13 May 2009 - The GNSS Research and Applications Centre of Excellence (GRACE), part of The University of Nottingham’s Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy (IESSG) are pleased to announce a major new satellite navigation signal test and simulation capability.

GRACE has taken delivery of an advanced Spirent GSS8000 hardware simulation system from Spirent Communications, replacing an earlier GSS7700 GPS system. The new system, one of the first to be delivered in the UK, consists of a two chassis, 16 channel GSS8000 system controlled by Spirent’s SimGEN software that can simulate current and future GPS signals, including L1, L2 and L5 signals and Galileo E1, E5 and E6 signals as well as WAAS and EGNOS Space Based Augmentation System signals.

The new simulation system will be available to SMEs looking to develop or test new applications. Providing access to the latest GNSS test facilities can be expensive, and it is anticipated that the system will build on GRACE’s growing reputation in the field of GNSS research and development.

Professor Terry Moore, Director of GRACE states “This new equipment will enable GRACE to advance research activity in numerous application domains in preparation for the forthcoming Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals”. It will also provide access for industry to GNSS research laboratory and training services, GNSS applications development and GNSS simulation, test-bed and testing facilities.

John Pottle, Marketing Director of Spirent Communications’ positioning technology activities added: “Spirent has a long-term relationship with GRACE and we are very pleased to be able to provide our multi-GNSS GSS8000 system to this important new facility. We look forward to continuing to work with Professor Moore and his team and to supporting the research activities that the simulation system will enable.”
