Popkomm-Experience in 3D

September 19, 2007 - Potsdam - With 3D Geo software the Popkomm, international business platform for the music and entertainment industry in Berlin, evolves from an excellent hearing experience to an additional visual experience. Using the LandXplorer technology of 3D Geo GmbH, Berlin Partner will visualize the 1.300 most important addresses of the Berlin music industry three dimensionally in Google Earth. Additionally they will be presented on a DVD of which 10.000
will be made available to visitors within the framework of the Popkomm.

"Unique throughout the world", judges the Berlin Partner GmbH the project 'See the Music' that is about to be launched. The internet platform that will go online in the run up to the Popkomm 2007 shall become the world wide
largest business platform for the music and entertainment industry, turning the listening into an additional visual experience. On 'See the Music' 1.300 addresses of the music industry will be presented three dimensionally in a city model in Google Earth. Music publishers, artists, labels, concert

- at the Popkomm 2007 they will also give their virtual 3D debut.

The core of the application, which will also be distributed on 10.000 DVDs to the visitors of the music fair, is the LandXplorer technology of 3D Geo GmbH. "With 'See the Music' the official city model of Berlin will become an
entertainment and special interest information platform. The LandXplorer products make it easy to extend the official city model by integrating additional points of interests." says Marc Hildebrandt, CEO of 3D Geo GmbH.

The background: As the first city worldwide, Berlin brought its three dimensional city model into Google Earth, in 2007. The technology base for Berlin in 3D was developed by scientists of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) for software system technology. The 3D model software, the close to reality impressions as well as the presentation techniques in Google Earth were provided by 3D Geo GmbH, a spin-off of the HPI.

Developed in Potsdam, the 3D software 'LandXplorer' makes it possible to process largest data volumes automatically and thus transforms two dimensional representations of reality, elegantly to the third dimension.
With the '3D Geo Creator' the 3D models are transferred into the format supported by Google Earth.

The new service "see the music" will be online today around 3 o`clock p.m.:

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

What message are we sending to senior level decision makers about the importance and value of Spatial Data Infrastructure - SDI - if we keep misrepresenting what SDI is or is all about?

In previous editorials in this magazine I have touched on various SDI issues, especially now that the pan-European SDI has achieved a legally mandated status within the European Union's 27 Member States. Yet I fear that the Geographic Information community - or communities, for there are many - continue to… More…
