OpenGEO, a company specialized in the development of corporative solutions with geographic intelligence and FOSS (Free and Open Source Software), has signed a partnership agreement with the gvSIG Association, the "Association for the promotion of FOSS4G and the development of gvSIG". Helton Nogueira Uchoa, manager of OpenGEO, and Alvaro Anguix, general manager of the gvSIG Association, have signed this agreement.
"This agreement strengthens the field of free geomatics (FOSS4G) and will help to build a competitive local industry, based on collaboration and knowledge sharing, where the proprietary software companies are gradually replaced." Helton said about it. Moreover, the general manager of the gvSIG Association has highlighted some benefits to be gained with this agreement: "This agreement is a way of sharing knowledge, and seeking new initiatives for mutual benefit."
OpenGEO is the leading company in the area of FOSS4G in Brazil and has achieved international recognition thanks to solutions such as Open 3D GIS, Geolivre Linux and phpPgGIS.
The gvSIG Association has the following objectives:
- To promote the use of software, based on the principles of free software defined by the Free Software Foundation, for applications aimed at capturing, processing, analysis, interpretation, dissemination and storage of geographic information.
- To develop and promote the use of a tool oriented to manage geographic information called gvSIG.
- To contribute to the research, development and spreading of Geomatics through projects developed by the gvSIG Association itself or jointly with others private or public entities.
- To establish itself as an international benchmark in the field of Geomatics, by generating any type of project or software application based on the aforementioned principles of free software.
- To promote the use of norms, standards, recommendations and open specifications in the management of geographic information to ensure interoperability between information systems.
