Capelle a/d IJssel, The Netherlands, January 30th, 2012 – Topcon Europe Positioning has announce the release of a new total station range to its mid-range engineering grade portfolio, the new OS Series.
Available in three different angular accuracy models (1”, 3” and 5”), and running the latest version of Windows CE 6.0, the OS Series re-defines this class of optical measuring device.
Topcon’s innovative LongLinkTM communication system also features on the OS total stations. This technology uses a long range Class 1 Bluetooth link to allow users to take control of the instrument remotely – up to 300m away from the instrument. This opens up the possibility for the surveyor on the pole to take full control of the survey, no more missed commands or codes, as well as reducing errors and therefore speeding up staking out operations.
Also featuring the same TSshield functionality as was released on the recent ES Series introduction, the OS takes full advantage of the telematics module, by allowing utilising the same innovative site security features as its sibling instrument. Using the telematics module, a digital code is automatically sent from the remote server to the instrument should it be reported as being missing or stolen.
This also means that the location of the instrument is tracked in such circumstances, and using the last known location of the device can assist and speed up the recovery of the instrument.
In addition, this TSshield telematics function allows for firmware update notifications to be sent to the instrument operator or owner who can then select whether to allow remote update of the system to take place.
On top of this, the OS runs Topcon’s latest data collection, management and transfer software solution Magnet Onboard. This innovative solution allows for full interaction with ‘the Cloud’… in other words, data can be seamlessly transferred to and from remote server locations ensuring that the surveyor or engineer has the very latest version of site drawings, as well as automatically sending new survey data ‘back to base’.
The OS manages to pack an incredible feature set for such a small instrument, including increased accuracy standards for both angular and distance measurement. Our IACS (Integrated Angular Calibration System) is employed on the 1” instrument for the ultimate in absolute reliability. With a prism measurement range of 4,000m with an accuracy of 2mm + 2pmm and an incredible 3mm +2ppm reflectorless measurement pinpointing locations up to 500m away.

Adopting Cloud computing can save money, but good governance is essential to manage the risk argues Mike Small
