Barcelona (Spain) - 15-18 February 2010 - NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of digital map, traffic and location data for in-vehicle, portable, wireless and enterprise solutions has been chosen as a preferred supplier by off-board GPS specialist, Appello. The Swedish company is utilising both data and a real time traffic service from NAVTEQ in its Wisepilot™ navigation platform for LG and Sony Ericsson GPS enabled handsets.
Appello is one of very few application developers to provide a navigation platform pre-installed in handsets across a range of device manufacturers and has recently added LG and Sony Ericsson to its customer portfolio. In these two cases, the Wisepilot™ solution is initially being offered to consumers in 55 countries and includes a 30 day ‘try and buy’ offer – following which there is a choice of subscription plans. Wisepilot™ features turn-by-turn navigation with voice direction and moving 3D maps plus premium guides, weather forecasts, safety camera warnings and automatic travel report journals.
“Our agreement with NAVTEQ gives us access to global map coverage with very high quality and a unified data structure,” commented Leif Sundström, Vice President and General Sales Director at Appello. “This helps us provide a rich wireless navigation experience for consumers all over the world as they travel from country to country.”
As an off-board solution, Wisepilot™ provides access to the latest available information and maps via a navigation server rather than storing data on the device. Response times are impressive and this technically innovative approach keeps data downloads to a minimum and means navigation can co-exist on the handset with music and photogaphs. Wisepilot™ is available in over 20 languages: Czech, simplified Chinese, Croatian, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovenian, Spanish and Swedish.
“NAVTEQ is pleased to have been selected as a preferred supplier by Appello, clearly a strong global player in the competitive telecoms industry.” added Serge Bussat. NAVTEQ Vice President Consumer & Wireless Sales Europe. ”Appello’s reliance on high quality map and traffic data to deliver unique navigation products to market is absolute. NAVTEQ is committed to providing this data and content globally to enable our customers to build the best possible experiences for their end users.”
