Up to date street works information provided via a hi-tech Mayrise system is improving traffic control in Oxfordshire. Helping to power the Council’s Urban Traffic Management Control system, road works data sits alongside other information, such as car park occupancy, CCTV and journey times, and is used to actively manage the road network. The combined Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) provides up to the minute information helping traffic controllers to make informed decisions about traffic signal timings, messages on electronic signs as well as updating travel news channels.
Oxfordshire Council use an Argonaut Urban Traffic Management Control (UTMC) database from Cloud Amber. The system enables operators to get a comprehensive and real time view of what is happening on the road network by pulling data from various sources, including information from MAYRISE Street Works, into one place. This information is then used to actively manage the road network by providing Car Park information together with both planned and unplanned events – such as road works, emergency repairs or accidents – through electronic signs and online updates.
“By feeding data directly from our MAYRISE Street Works software into the heart of our traffic control room, once an event has been flagged by the UTMC, operators can identify the cause of the problem and take the appropriate action,” commented Patrick Mulvihill, Street Works Manager at Oxfordshire County Council.
MAYRISE Street Works software is used as the Street Works Register for all road works in Oxfordshire and is linked to the UTMC by a simple XML data feed. Notices of impending works are received electronically from utilities companies and the Council’s own roadworks term maintenance contractor and imported into the Mayrise system. Street works management also uses MAYRISE to register events that may impact on the highway, road closures and private works. All notified works are co-ordinated, monitored and enforced by Network Supervisors using reports generated by the MAYRISE system.
Lee Williams of Cloud Amber, suppliers of Oxfordshire’s UTMC system commented, “Our system connects directly to an XML data feed from MAYRISE to insert the street works data into the UTMC. This is a nice solution as the data is updated quickly and easily. It’s an advanced and robust method compared to other systems that use ‘txt’ files.”
MAYRISE Street Works is a complete solution for managing street works. Handling the Street Works Register, National Street Gazetteer, maintenance, inspections management, defect reporting and locational referencing, the system eliminates paperwork, ensures best practice and provides up to date information on the status of all works. MAYRISE Street Works offers full compliance with EToN 5 a new Traffic Management Act specification that allows the introduction of Permit Schemes, adds facilities for Unattributable Works, Section 50 licences, FPN via email and Notice Attachments.
