MAPPS Public Service Award to Moody K. Miles

July 23, 2007 - Moody K. "M.K." Miles, III, PE, LS, was presented with the first ever MAPPS Public Service Award during the MAPPS Awards Banquet in Bretton Woods, NH, on 16 June.

The award was created by the MAPPS board of directors to recognize and honor employees in public service positions who have made extraordinary contributions to the public and the geospatial profession in their government service roles.

Miles is currently the Deputy Chief of Engineering and Construction, Civil Works Directorate, in the headquarters of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (HQUSACE) in Washington, DC. He has over 30 years of experience in Engineering and Construction at HQUSACE. Miles is a licensed Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor in Virginia.

"M.K. has been an exemplary member of the Corps' management and a great ambassador to MAPPS over his tenure. He has been one of the unwavering advocates within the Federal government in support of professionalism and quality in the delivery of geospatial services," said outgoing MAPPS President Kurt Allen (Photo Science, Inc., Bowie, MD).

Miles was honored during a MAPPS Awards ceremony during the association's annual Summer Conference and 25th anniversary celebration held the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, NH. Miles was joined by his wife Linda at the ceremony.

"M.K. was the selection of the MAPPS board of directors as the first recipient of the Public Service Award based on the fact that he is the only Federal official to have worked with MAPPS throughout our 25 year history, and more importantly, his service to MAPPS and to the federal government over his career epitomizes professionalism. M.K. has always had an open door, a win-win approach to problem solving, and a commitment to excellence, quality and the highest professional standards in the engineering, surveying, mapping and geospatial disciplines. M.K. has worked with MAPPS on many issues, advocated qualifications based selection and promoted utilization of the private sector in surveying, mapping and geospatial-related activities," said John Palatiello, MAPPS Executive Director, when presenting the award.
