Quebec, September 26, 2007 / KOREM, a leader in the development and integration of Web-mapping solutions and geographic information systems, announced today the release of the KOREM Quebec Street Database (QSDB), which integrates NAVTEQ street level data with Quebec official odonyms (street names) for the entire province. KOREM, NAVTEQ, and the Commission de toponymie of Quebec (CTQ) worked to integrate the official street names with NAVTEQ map data of Quebec. KOREM’s QSDB, available in October 2007, provides normalized map display and enhanced geocoding and routing capacities.
KOREM selected NAVTEQ’s map data of Quebec because of the quality and precision of its geometric data and high percentage of named streets and address ranges. According to Mr. Sebastien Vachon, President of KOREM, “NAVTEQ has participated in every step of the project with a remarkable level of efficiency therefore demonstrating the professionalism and dedication of this international leader.”
KOREM’s Quebec Street Database is being offered to existing, licensed NAVTEQ customers as an add-on. For new customers, KOREM is offering a bundled version of the QSDB that includes NAVTEQ map data of Quebec integrated with Quebec official odonyms. KOREM’s QSDB will be available in MapInfo, TAB, ESRI Shapefile, and Oracle map data formats. It also includes all original NAVTEQ variables, CTQ’s normalized odonyms, and treatment codes.
“Working in close collaboration with the Commission de toponymie of Quebec inevitably contributed to the success and credibility of this project”, adds Mr. Vachon. This public organization which was created by Charter of the French language is responsible for managing place names in the province of Quebec. According to Article 128 of the Charter, “Upon the publication in the Gazette officielle du Québec of the names chosen or approved by the Commission, the use of such names becomes obligatory in texts and documents of the civil administration and the semipublic agencies, in traffic signs, in public signs and posters and in teaching manuals and educational and research works published in Québec and approved by the Minister of Education.” (http://www.toponymie.gouv.qc.ca/ct/anglais.html)
“With the integration of premium NAVTEQ map data and the Commission de toponymie of Quebec’s odonyms, KOREM’s QSDB is a one-of-a-kind product,” commented Roy Kolstad, Vice President and General Manager – Enterprise, NAVTEQ. “We are pleased to be a part of KOREM’s QSDB, which has been recognized as the only product that meets Quebec Province government requirements for official street names.”

Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.What message are we sending to senior level decision makers about the importance and value of Spatial Data Infrastructure - SDI - if we keep misrepresenting what SDI is or is all about?
In previous editorials in this magazine I have touched on various SDI issues, especially now that the pan-European SDI has achieved a legally mandated status within the European Union's 27 Member States. Yet I fear that the Geographic Information community - or communities, for there are many - continue to… More…
