Sepura is to supply TETRA digital radios to Johannesburg, South Africa, which will become one of the first major cities in the world to have an integrated communications system for its utilities services.
Tim Mills, Sepura’s Regional Sales Director, said: “Strategically, this is the most important order we have achieved in South Africa, and a substantial increase in business is now expected in this rapidly expanding market region for TETRA.”
Initially, SRH3800 GPS hand-held radios and SRG3500 GPS radios for vehicles will be deployed for use by electricians, electrical engineers and technicians working for City Power, which supplies the city and surrounding region with electricity.
It is planned that the network will then be rolled out to the city’s bus and water supply departments.
The contract was secured by Sepura’s distribution partner in South Africa, Ikwezi Maintenance & Communications and Global Communications. The new system replaces its aging analogue system, and will provide an efficient, reliable and secure digital communications network for services that are critical to the community.
Errol Baker, Director of Ikwezi/Global Communications, added: “The new system will enable better management of personnel, and provide improved information on the availability of power, as some areas only receive power for a certain number of hours of the day.”
“The system is set to be a forerunner in establishing improved communications throughout the region’s public safety users, ahead of the Football World Cup in 2010 – the biggest sporting event ever, anywhere in Africa.”

Adopting Cloud computing can save money, but good governance is essential to manage the risk argues Mike Small
