Geotechnical software specialists Keynetix and The Drilling Academy have chosen the ultra rugged JLT 8404 tablet PC to provide reliable weatherproof computing power for their specialist borehole logging software. The team selected the Swedish designed and built IP65-rated JLT computer to run its KeyLogbook paperless borehole logging software because it offers advanced specifications for consistent outdoor use and value for money.
"Our integrated KeyLogbook system is used in all weathers and conditions for geotechnical drilling. The JLT 8404 fits the bill perfectly. Its touchscreen is the brightest on the market and is fully adjustable for varying light conditions. The sturdy aircraft-grade aluminium casing is robust enough for use at the drilling site and drillers like the device as it is easy to use when wearing gloves", says Roger Chandler, Technical Director, Keynetix.
"Uniquely, the computer runs off a 12-volt supply - we simply power it with the drilling rig's battery. Although, other devices use similar or the same processor, the JLT simply performs better with our Microsoft Windows-based software,"
he adds.
The tablet PC is fixed to a drilling rig using a specially designed and manufactured Keynetix mount. This is constructed from a single piece of aluminium and has an external IP68-rated 12-volt connector.
"Traditional mounting plates have extra features that we don't need on a drilling site. Our uniquely designed mount is made from a single piece of 1050A-grade aluminium and incorporates an IP65-rated electrical connector; we provide an unwired male connector, which can simply be wired to the battery using crocodile clips," says Roger Chandler.
KeyLogbook is an integrated solution for producing fully compliant driller's logs. It captures borehole data at source, saving time and improving data collection accuracy. The software guides the driller through the logging process from pre-start inspections to sample testing. The system allows onsite sample label printing and converts logs automatically into the AGS (The Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists) data format or PDF. This allows the user to send complete or partial information back to the office or direct to the client using the tablet PC's built in 3G/GPRS connectivity.
