On behalf of CDTI (GMES National Coordinator, Spain) we have the pleasure to inform you about an INSPIRE-GMES Workshop for Land Cover organised upon the initiative of Spain, in collaboration with the Spanish Mapping Agency (IGN), the GMES Bureau (DG Enterprise and Industry) and INSPIRE SDI Unit (JRC).
It will take place at the Exhibition Room of the Ministry of Public Works, Paseo de la Castellana 67 in Madrid, Spain from June 29, 2009 14:00 until July 1st, 14:00.
Land Cover and Land Cover change have been defined as essential component of the GMES Land Monitoring Core Service (LMCS) by the LMCS Implementation Group, based on existing operational Land cover activities at European level (Corine, Urban Atlas) and precursor projects (EC R&D FP6/FP7 projects, ESA GSE). A Land Cover service element has also been proposed by the Commission to be part of the GMES initial operations (2011-2013). The detailed contents and implementation scheme still have to be discussed with the stakeholders, taking account of other initiatives (in particular INSPIRE).
In this context there is a need to discuss harmonisation and standardisation of Land Cover and Land use information at various level (national, European and Global) and to co-ordinate the development of INSPIRE and GMES initatives in this field.
