IGN France International opens UAE office

IGN France International, the export subsidiary of the French Geographic Institute, has just opened a new
subsidiary company in Abu Dhabi.

The launch of this foreign office was conceived as a means to efficiently respond to the growing needs of
decision‐makers in the Middle East, specifically in the field of geomatics (mapping, geodesy, geographic data,
GIS, web portals…) and to accompany them in their infrastructural projects.

Sylvain GEVREY, IGN France International Regional Director for the Gulf countries, considers the region’s needs in terms of geographic information essential: “The United Arab Emirates are experiencing a wave of intense urbanization that can be cited via major projects in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, or smaller cities like Al Ain and Sharjah.

Municipalities are starting to have important roles in the organization, management and prevention of risks. Obviously, managing urban growth requires the most recent mapping possible, one that is continually updated; starting with a multi‐form GIS and integrating services, cadastre, addressing and urban 3D rendering, WEB mapping relies on the most recent and sophisticated technologies. The demand is large, and urgent.

We want to provide long‐term assistance to the decision‐makers, which is why IGN France International decided that its presence in Abu Dhabi was indispensable. The new site is already up‐and‐running, in the framework of a consultancy contract with the Abu Dhabi Municipality on urban 3D.”

Beyond the Emirates’ borders, IGN France International, using its new local presence, hopes to reiterate its intention to build a sustainable relationship in the Gulf region.

As a reminder, IGN France International already has experience in several area countries, attained through the following projects that the company has had the opportunity to complete in recent years:

• the implementation of a geodetic network as well as a leveling network in Northern Yemen, and then throughout the country,

• photographs and new mapping of a site for the installation of a pipeline (Yemen),

• mapping of the Rub Al‐Khali desert, for the city of Riyadh (Saudi Arabia),

• demarcation of the border between Saudi Arabia and Qatar…
