Google and the city of Hamilton have recently collaborated to make Hamilton’s public transit information available for free through Google map. Tamara Micner, a Google spokesperson, explained that launching this feature was a very quick and easy process. “It only took a couple of months in the making, it was fairly straightforward and the city of Hamilton was very easy to work with. Also, the reason we have this capability within Google map is that the aim of Google map is to help people get around easier and help them explore their area and get relevant local information,” elaborated Micner.
Google map is also an easy way to access the information for any individuals with the web browser feature on their cell phones. “You can access it from mobile phones as well, [either through] Blackberry’s or the iPhone through web browser. So it covers most phones.”
Usually when the addresses of two locations are entered into the Google map search engine, the choice of either walking or driving is provided. The service started on Nov. 12, with any Google map search within the city of Hamilton will provide an additional option of public transit directions. This feature is only available in four other Canadian cities; comprising of Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal and Frederickson. Hamilton is so far the fifth city in Canada to receive this feature. The results are available in both English and French.
Google map is also very detailed. When requesting public transit information, the website provides actual routes, departure times of the bus, presumed arrival time, and walking directions to the requested location off the bus.
Micner explained why she believes this feature is very important for Hamilton residents, “Hamilton is a part of the golden horseshow trend system and it’s the 13th largest city in terms of transit ridership in Canada. So it’s pretty key.”
