GeyserValley2009 Conference, Kamchatka, September

ScanEx R&D Center will sponsor the International conference “Methods of neogeography and virtual environment in visualization of geodata”, GeyserValley2009. Conference will take place on September 15-17, 2009 in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and provide the specialists with an opportunity to discuss a wide variety of aspects in scientific visualization in geosciences — geology, geography and environmental science.

The Conference is organized by Institute of Computing for Physics and Technology (ICPT, Protvino) on the base of Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of Far Eastern ranch of Russian Academy of Sciences (IVaS FEB RAS, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky) and supported by the Federal state institution “Kronotsky state natural biosphere reserve” and Russian Foundation for Basic Research.

Andrey Leonov, Steering Committee Chairman at “GeyserValley2009”, ICPT senior research assistant, said:

— The conference was named “GeyserValley2009” for a purpose. Kamchatka’s Valley of Geysers is a unique scientific research and tourism site, which features intensive and often irreversible natural phenomena. The Valley can clearly demonstrate the advantages and potential of applying the whole range of up-to-date methods of neogeography, virtual environment and emergency simulation in geosciences. Kamchatka specialists wholeheartedly supported our initiative to develop a virtual model of the Valley of Geysers, and we hope the Conference will pave the way for an effective cooperation.

— IVaS FEB RAS closely follows the new technology development, and has a stake in innovation scientific visualization methods, — assured Vladimir Leonov, academic secretary of IVaS FEB RAS.

One of the major topics of the Conference will be the publication of geospatial data in the web-portals. By developing geoportal technologies for a few years, ScanEx R&D Center has accumulated a good experience implementing and upgrading the technology. The popular geoportal kosmosnimki.ru has been functioning since 2007, providing an access to the mapping materials and satellite imagery, as well as the space imagery catalogues of ScanEx R&D and providers of high resolution and super high resolution satellite imagery.

Kosmosnimki.ru operates ScanEx Web GeoMixer® technology, which combines various types of data in the same project, operates both bit map and vector format and connects metadata bases with the search function.

— ScanEx Web GeoMixer® technology has already been deployed in special solutions for environmental and ship navigation conditions in the sea, monitoring of river flooding, etc., — noted Vladimir Gershenzon ScanEx R&D Center, who will take part in “Methods of neogeography and virtual environment in visualization of geo-data” Conference and share the experience in launching geodata projects based on Remote Earth Sensing data.

— The prime objective of the Conference is to demonstrate the potential and discuss the Kamchatka specific applications in geology, geography and environmental science, — assures Andrey Leonov. — First, it is development of popular science models of geographical sites, designed for “virtual tourism” and environmental outreach activities, promotion of remote tourism routes and sites. Secondly, it is 3-D and 4-D simulation and scientific visualization of geological processes in actual geographical coordinates, open to all concerned researchers.

Evgeny Eremchenko, expert specialist, member of the Conference steering committee, emphasized:

— Neoheography — is a fundamentally new way of representing the reality. Forming the image of the environment based on its variability and uniqueness is a crucial mission. It is encouraging to see that the new opportunities have been identified and understood at the early stage and there is a demand for them Russia.
