Geospatial Imaging is now ERDAS

(Heerbrugg/Norcross, 9 April 2008) Leica Geosystems announces that its Geospatial Imaging Division has changed its name to ERDAS – “The Earth to Business Company”, specializing in software solutions. The division has reintroduced the ERDAS name, and will do business under this name moving forward.

“Across a broad range of industries, more organizations are using geospatial information to drive business decisions and processes,” said Bob Morris, President & CEO, ERDAS. “ERDAS is defining the systems that will put the information around our changing earth to work in business.”

Throughout the geospatial software industry, the ERDAS name has tremendous value. In addition to having credibility and recognition with existing customers, the ERDAS name is also renowned in new, emerging markets. Building off an established brand, the company is broadening its offerings. The recent acquisitions of Acquis, ER Mapper and IONIC provide the company with new technology and strengthen its global presence. As “The Earth to Business Company”, the new ERDAS’ product portfolio encompasses the entire geospatial information lifecycle of authoring, managing, connecting and delivering integrated business data.

The name change to “ERDAS” is a strategic decision not affecting other business areas, divisions and products at Leica Geosystems. “Leica Geosystems is the industry leader in the airborne data capture industry. Our product collection includes the most sophisticated airborne sensor solutions including imaging sensor, Lidar sensors and related workflow software. ERDAS, a well-known name in the photogrammetry and remote sensing world, is a natural extension to these products“, says Juergen Dold, Sr. Vice President Business Area Imaging and Scanning at Leica Geosystems.

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

What message are we sending to senior level decision makers about the importance and value of Spatial Data Infrastructure - SDI - if we keep misrepresenting what SDI is or is all about?

In previous editorials in this magazine I have touched on various SDI issues, especially now that the pan-European SDI has achieved a legally mandated status within the European Union's 27 Member States. Yet I fear that the Geographic Information community - or communities, for there are many - continue to… More…
