GIS4EU AT THE ENVIRO-I-FÓRUM CONFERENCE

The fifth annual ENVIRO-i-FORUM conference, organized by the Slovak Environmental Agency and Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, was held at the Technical University in Zvolen, Slovakia, from 9-11 June 2009. The ENVIRO-i-FORUM conference, mainly with Slovak and Czech participation, focused on presentation, processing and exploitation of available environmental information. A community of experts from public administration, self-government, research institutes, universities, private companies and users shared their experiences in the field of geographical information systems (GIS).

Each year the ENVIRO-i-FORUM conference covers current aspects of environmental information use, and in 2009 the main topics were:

• sharing of environmental information within the European Union,
• INSPIRE information day,
• protection of the environment and the role of geographical information systems,
• information systems, registers and environmental data, and
• presenting environmental information on the Internet.

Members of the GIS4EU project from the Research Institute of Geodesy and Cartography (VUGK) in Bratislava participated actively in the conference, presenting the GIS4EU project aims and activities in order to increase the knowledge of Slovak and Czech experts. Information about the GIS4EU project focused on motivation, main goals, cartographic sample, as well as partners and their hierarchy. Also VUGK data provider's activities were described from the data specification and metadata points of view. The significance of the GIS4EU project within the EU was stressed.
