Mr. Abdul Salam Mansour, Tunisian Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, opened the 4th session of the GEOTUNIS International Congress on 16 December 2009, this year with the theme "Contribution of Geomatic Technologies in the study of Resource water and monitoring of desertification”. The congress ran from 16 – 20 December, held at the Center for International Environmental Technologies of Tunis, under the Patronage the President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
The conference began with the opening of the scientific sessions. With the participation of hundreds of experts and specialists from 57 countries from the different continents: Africa, Asia, America, Europe, His Excellency the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, the representative of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Karim Abdul Aziz, Advisor to the President Her Highness the Princess Dr Mashael Al-Saud, Professor Dr. Ronald F. Abler President of the International Geographical Union, the Congress President Mohamed Ayari and General Coordinator of the Scientific Committee Dr. Lutfi Momani and President of the Order of Surveyors-topograph of Lebanon Dr. Sarkis Fadous and many international personalities and Scientists have taken a turn in the salon Geotechnology, the exhibition within the Congress GEOTUNIS.
The Minister and guests visited the booth of the Tunisian Association of Digital Geographic Information to learn of scientific achievements such as the environmental and tourism portal of Tunisia and the digital atlas of the Arab world.
The lecturers presented during the Congress more than 200 communications in 20 scientific sessions under the theme “Survey of the hydraulic resources and of desertification by using the geographic information systems, remote detection and numeric designing”.
The various researchers, academicians, institutions, research centres, private and public enterprises participated in different aspects of the Congress in which they presented work papers, surveys, experimental research and workshops, in addition to the geo-technological exhibition which was held at this occasion under the sponsorship of well-known international institutions that are active in geographic information systems and remote sensing, and its various applications to hydraulic resources and desertification.
The congress was concluded on Friday, 18 December 2009, with the Minister of equipments, housing and land planning, Mr Malouch Slaheddine, the representative of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. The minister had also met Prof. Dr. Abd Al-Malik Al-Sheikh, General Secretary of Water Prize Prince Sultan.
