GEO-9, the UK’s only dedicated geospatial trade exhibition, is set for success. With a programme of free, show-floor seminars, a special half-day seminar sponsored by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a range of social networking opportunities, GEO-9 has already attracted record visitor registrations and support from UK and international suppliers of geospatial products and services including Leica Geosystems, Trimble, ESRI (UK) and the Environment Agency. GEO-9, which takes place on the 1st and 2nd of April 2009 at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, has also drawn support from the Association for Geographic Information and The Survey Association.
For the second year running GEO-9 will feature a packed programme of show-floor seminars. Mary Spence, MBE and past president of the British Cartographic Society, who sparked international debate when she blasted online maps, will once again address the issue with “Does cartography matter when Google and Microsoft are just a few clicks away?” while speakers from the Association for Geographic Information will address the topic “How GI affects us all: the UK Location Strategy and the EU Inspire Initiative”. In response to the current economic climate the Survey Association has sponsored “Strategies and tactics for surviving and thriving in challenging times” presented by Mark Levey of BKL Accountants and Colin Willman Chair of the Federation of Small Businesses Education, Skills and Business Support Policy.
GEO-9 will also co-host a half-day seminar supported by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Raising awareness of new technology, best practice and ideas, ‘Property: the changing paradigm’ will include sessions covering topical issues such as ‘Flood Risk and Insurance: it’s all about location and height’, ‘Neighbour Disputes, Boundaries and the Law – there’s now a better way’ and ‘Energy Performance Certificates: efficient and timely surveys’.
“Of course the success of any event is not just about the 9-5,” said Stephen Booth of PV Publications, organisers of the event and publishers of Geomatics World, GIS Professional and Engineering Surveying Showcase. “It is often the case that as much, if not more, is achieved out of hours at events like our annual Gala Dinner.” The GEO-9 Gala Dinner will feature live entertainment from Europe’s top Western Swing Band, the Swing Commanders, an amusing and insightful look at life from retired Police Officer, Football Referee and experienced After Dinner Speaker John McKelvie and a four course banquet with wine.
GEO-9 will take place on the 1st and 2nd of April 2009 at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry; a world-class centre for business, entertainment and sport. The Ricoh Arena offers state-of-the-art conference, banqueting, exhibition, hotel and sports facilities and the multi purpose complex has already won awards for its design. Occupying more than 40 acres close to the M6 motorway, the Arena is centrally located and easy to access.
