FARO portable 3D coordinate measuring equipment

Coventry, 17th June 2009 – Visitors to this year’s SPE Offshore Europe Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition will be able to see live demonstrations of FARO 3D measurement devices. The event attracts a global audience of engineers, industry leaders and experts, to share ideas, debate and to create common agendas for the future of the upstream industry. FARO will be at stand 1581 in the Blue Zone at Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre from the 8th to 11th September 2009.

FARO provides portable 3D measurement systems for a wide range of industries, with the offshore sector being one of them. The products allow manufacturers to perform 3D inspections of parts and assemblies on site, providing customers with quick access to accurate data. FARO laser scanning equipment also enables users to document and reverse engineer quickly and accurately – from small parts to whole offshore sites or petrochemical facilities.

Andrew Tagg, FARO UK Regional Manager North, commented: “We are looking forward to meeting with both our current and prospective customers. They will experience live demonstrations during the event tailored to their needs. We will show our leading edge, high-quality products, including the FaroArm Quantum. This is a portable measuring arm that can measure accurately to within ±.016mm and we think it will be a big hit with the visitors!”

The FaroArm is used by customers like Eden Engineering – part of the Weir Services division. The company specialises in re-engineering and manufacture of a wide range of spare parts for pumps, turbines and other rotating equipment. Manager of Eden Engineering, Ernie Kilgour describes the most important benefit, “Prior to the purchase of our FaroArms, we relied on traditional measuring equipment. With the FaroArm models we were able to drastically reduce the time required to re-engineer a component without destroying the part.”

FARO will also showcase the FARO Gage, part of its line of personal Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs). It has a 1.2m working volume, which allows it to be a truly portable ‘mount-it-to-where-you-make-it’ solution. The FARO Gage is a cost-effective, 3D gage for machinists and requires only minimal training. The product replaces all conventional gauging devices and has an expandable library of software gauging tools.

In the oil & gas industry, the FARO customer Pacson Valves provides a good example of the benefits of using the FARO Gage. They are a key supplier of high integrity valves and are using the Gage for inspections: “We can now inspect parts with complicated geometry within the machining area which is another big time saving, because we can inspect the part on the machine,” Managing Director Keith Crawford explained.

FARO’s product range also includes the FARO Laser Scanner Photon which offers the fastest and longest range phase shift laser scanning solution in the market place. The Photon models capture and analyse detailed 3D images of large objects efficiently by reducing scan time and post processing work.

The product range is toped off by the FARO Laser Tracker - a portable measuring system which uses laser technology to effectively and accurately measure large parts, tooling and machinery with a range from .003mm to 35m.
