Encom, a subsidiary of Pitney Bowes and a leading provider of desktop geoscientific and GIS software, data management, and advanced technical consulting for the Natural Resources sector, has announced the latest edition of its flagship Discover GIS.

Discover version 10.0 provides geoscientists with a total solution for data collection, analysis, modelling, and visualisation in one integrated product. With this software release, Encom has added an impressive set of new capabilities to this already powerful tool. A host of new additions including new gridding and surface functionality, time-saving drillhole management and grid
layout tools, a new point classification tool, and extensive improvements to graphical mapping, mean geoscientists now have greater flexibility and control in achieving the results they need.

Exploration geologists today are working with increasingly large datasets and, as a consequence, they need to be able to access this information easily and quickly without spending hours converting and reformatting data.

The release of Discover 10.0 addresses these needs by delivering performance boosts of up to
30% in many data processing tools along with vastly improved grid handling capabilities.
Extremely large (>10 Gigabyte) grids, such as continental scale digital elevation models,
magnetic or gravity datasets, can now be imported and visualised with ease.

If advanced data processing of large grids is required, the original grid can be cut into smaller tiles and these tiles can then be selectively and efficiently processed by Discover’s powerful surface manipulation tools. Discover’s already powerful grid manipulation, analysis, and presentation tools have been further enhanced with new utilities for computing true surface areas, cut-and-fill volumes, surface profiles, and grid outlines. Other practical additions to the grid handling capabilities include improvements to contour labelling, and support for HGT (raw Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data files), Landmark, Geosoft GFX, and MapInfo MIG grid file formats.

The Grid Layout tool, which is used to layout grid lines and pegs for geochemical sampling
traverses, airborne surveys and drilling programmes, also sports a much friendlier user interface.

Geoscientists can now interactively define, preview, and modify baselines and quickly generate survey lines and pegs on rectangular, triangular, or diamond pattern grids.

Version 10 includes many other practical additions and improvements for multi-variate data classification, mapping, graphing, and visualisation. Geoscientists can now spend more time exploring and interpreting their data and focusing on making discoveries.

with the addition of a new, intuitive, wizard-style interface. The Section Manager tool has been redesigned to give users better and more visual control over section definitions and the data they contain.

Environmental and engineering data from the gINT borehole logging application can now
be imported into a Discover drillhole project—combining all geochemical, geophysical,
lithological, engineering and environmental data in one application, and in a single view.
