Dan Bowditch Recives Distinguished Service Award

Phoenix, Ariz., April 27, 2010 — The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced today that Dan Bowditch of Vancouver, B.C., Canada, has been named the recipient of GITA’s 2010 Distinguished Service Award. The award is bestowed on individuals whose extraordinary personal contributions have added to the success of GITA. The presentation was made at GITA’s 2010 Geospatial Infrastructure Solutions Conference, being held April 25-29, at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Ariz.

Bowditch joined AM/FM International in 1990 while working for BC Hydro as the project manager for its initial province-wide GIS implementation. His early years were dedicated to learning as much as possible from the association and its members. Then it was time to give back in return for all the learning and user benefits that he received.

He has participated in presenting at several conference seminars related initially to data conversion and later to business case development. He has presented a number of conference papers and is a Speaker Award recipient. He also presented live from his North Vancouver home in the very first GITA Web Seminar.

Bowditch was a member of the Executive Management Symposium Committee for four years, including co-chair at Lake Tahoe in 1985 and chair at Hilton Head Island in 1986. He was a member of the Board of Directors for four years, from 1997 to 2001 serving as Secretary in 1999 and President in 2000. During that time, he participated in the re-branding of AM/FM International to GITA.

Dan was a founding member of the Pacific Northwest Chapter in 2000. Since leaving the Board, Dan has continued to participate as a member of the Awards Committee, which he has chaired for the past three years. He calls GITA the best-run association that he has ever volunteered with and expresses his gratitude for the many opportunities it affords to contribute to the geospatial community.

After a career with BC Hydro, Westech, Accenture, Ubisense, and his own Starboard Consulting, Dan has finally retired. He now spends his time with his wife, Ursula, road cycling and kayaking, and is involved in several nonprofit organizations, such as Social Venture Partners and the Rogue Folk Club.
