Following a rigorous selection process aerial survey specialist Bluesky has been appointed as contractor to the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW). The framework contract covers the provision of range of data capture, data conversion and cartographic services to support the Council in its role as statutory advisor to the Government. Under the contract Bluesky can be called upon to provide a variety of aerial photography services including Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), infrared imaging, georeferencing and scanning together with the production of index maps.
“We selected Bluesky as they clearly demonstrated experience and expertise in the relevant fields,” commented Mo Gash, Senior Cartographer at the Countryside Council for Wales. “The examples of work presented by Bluesky provided evidence of their capability, quality of service and response time - all essential components to support the environmental and wildlife work we carry out.”
The framework contract issued by CCW will run until 2014 and is expected to include the provision of ad hoc aerial photography services including traditional RGB photography for mapping and site surveys, infrared imaging to help assess the health and state of vegetation and LiDAR mapping for high accuracy height modelling. Bluesky may also be called upon to create digital index maps for existing aerial photographs and provide georeferencing and scanning services to the Council or its partners.
CCW acts as a statutory advisor to the Government on sustaining natural beauty, wildlife and the opportunity for outdoor enjoyment in Wales and its inshore waters. Championing the environment and landscape of Wales as sources of natural and cultural riches, as a foundation for economic and social activity and as a place for leisure and learning CCW gives advice, provides protection, promotes enjoyment and undertakes a range of research and survey projects all centred on the Welsh countryside.
Bluesky is a UK based specialist in aerial survey services and has already published an aerial photomap covering the whole of Wales. Created from more than 7,000 individual images the highly detailed, full colour photography covers approximately 20,000 square kilometres at 25cm resolution. Captured using new digital camera technology the onboard digital sensor also captured infrared imagery for identifying vegetation and land elevation data was extracted allowing the creation of a three-dimensional terrain model of the whole country. All these data layers are available to view and purchase online at www.bluesky-world.com.
