City University UK Summer 2008 Masterclass Series

City University Summer 2008 Masterclass Series

Programme

Wednesday June 4th Geospatial mashups [City University]
Thursday June 26th Mobile navigation [City University]
Wednesday July 9th State of the Art in Location Based Services 2008 [National Physical Lab, Teddington]
Tuesday July 22nd Mobile search [City University]

City University giCentre announce their programme of summer Masterclasses delivered by their internationally known group of academics, programmers, writers and entrepreneurs. City Masterclasses are delivered from an informed and neutral third perspective by those with deep knowledge of their subjects and proven teaching skills. Attending City Masterclasses can be a valuable 'heads up' on the explosive development of these various fields or a piece of continuing professional development. All the Masterclasses have high instructor/ participant ratios and include hands on sessions with the technology, and are held in a variety of locations (see details) including City University's accessible and brand new accommodation between Angel and Farringdon in central London. They will also provide an opportunity to meet other professionals in the same area and a chance to see the innovative research being conducted in these areas at the University.

Who should attend?

City University Masterclasses are designed as accessible but practical briefings for those with positions focussed on developments in GIS, search and LBS, for example, researchers, designers, marketeers, managers and analysts in either the private, public or voluntary sector. They are aimed at busy decision makers looking for a 'digested read' on these rapidly developing technologies, and will offer practical examples of where to find the value in them. These Masterclasses will be eligible for continuing professional development credit.

Who teaches the courses?

These one-day courses are led by internationally known GIS, information retrieval and LBS researchers at City University including Professor Jonathan Raper, Dr David Mountain, Dr Jason Dykes, Dr Ayse Göker and Dr Vesna Brujic-Okretic, all of whom are members of the UK's largest research group in this area, the giCentre (http://www.gicentre.net/).

The giCentre is fully equipped with GIS and geovisualisation tools, maintains several strategic datasets and teaches two Masters courses in GI Systems and GI Management. The staff of the giCentre are closely involved in the Willis Research Network (http://www.willisresearchnetwork.com/), are members of the Dutch-led 3D GIS consortium (http://www.rgi-otb.nl/3dtopo/index.htm) and the EU-funded Vismaster research network.

Jonathan Raper and David Mountain are the founders of Location Based Services Research (LBSR) at City University and they also run one of City's spinoff companies that commercialises the technology from projects at LBSR, while Ayse Göker helps to run the Ambiesense LBS spinoff. The LBSR team has a range of mobile devices in its collection and access to a wide range of datasets and services. Jonathan is the Editor of the Journal of Location Based Services (http://www.informaworld.com/jlbs)

Each Masterclass will be a mixture of lectures, demonstrations and Q&A sessions and will offer all participants hands-on experience with the technology. Participants will receive copies of the course materials including research papers, case studies and bibliographies on CD and will be introduced to a wide range on online resources.

Pricing and registration

£395 per person with lunch and materials
Places on the Masterclasses can be booked through Alison Barrett, on 020 7040 8730 or via email on alisonb@soi.city.ac.uk. This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

What message are we sending to senior level decision makers about the importance and value of Spatial Data Infrastructure - SDI - if we keep misrepresenting what SDI is or is all about?

In previous editorials in this magazine I have touched on various SDI issues, especially now that the pan-European SDI has achieved a legally mandated status within the European Union's 27 Member States. Yet I fear that the Geographic Information community - or communities, for there are many - continue to… More…
