Cadcorp hosts maritime seminar

Maritime GIS users meet in Hertfordshire
Stevenage, Herts. 19 June, 2009. - Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer, Cadcorp, recently hosted a meeting dedicated to supporting GIS users working in the maritime industry. Cadcorp SIS - Spatial Information System has been adopted by a number of GIS users in the maritime sector for reasons including its extensive support for data formats (including the IHO S57 format; a vector interchange format used for maritime charts), direct connection to various databases, support for open standards and cartographic map production tools.

Held at Cadcorp’s head office in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, UK attendees included representatives from port authorities, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), Seazone (a market leader for the provision of marine geographic information, software and services) and various other Cadcorp business partners working in the sector.

Port of London Authority delivered an informative presentation which included a presentation of the newly updated DSIS (Dredging Information System) web mapping application which has been developed using Cadcorp’s web-based GIS, GeognoSIS.

William Heaps of Associated British Ports showed how Cadcorp SIS has been used as part of a real time vessel management system at the Port of Southampton.

Cadcorp gave a demonstration of its recently launched SIS 7, with a particular emphasis on the capabilities of the product in this sector. Attendees were shown how developments in web-based GIS could promote better exchange of information between departments and with business partner organisations, thus contributing to an increased return on investment.

William Heaps of Associated British Port commented, “It was a useful and enjoyable day.”

Mike O’Neil, managing director, Cadcorp, said, “We are delighted to bring together customers, partners and industry bodies to a forum where everyone learns something. We are looking forward to hosting more maritime sessions in the future.”
