organized in the frame of CASCADOSS Project which main subject is evaluation
of FOSS4G (Free and Open Source for Geomatics) solutions in environmental applications.
Evaluating Free and Open Source Software for Geoinformation for Environmental Applications
International Symposium June 16th 2008 and International Information Workshop June 17th-19th 2008
Warsaw, Poland
A 1-day International Symposium and a 3-day International Information Workshop will be held in Warsaw. The Symposium will take place on 16 June, immediately followed by the Workshop from 17 to 19 June 2008.
The main purpose of the International Symposium is to present results accomplished so far by the CASCADOSS Project such as outcomes of an evaluation of available GIS&RS OSS solutions, and to demonstrate the most promising and useful applications.
The following subject will be also discussed:
- How can open-source software foster use of GI technologies (particularly with respect to the
GMES Programme) in the public sector?
- How do existing GI standards contribute to the development of open-source applications?
What are the current trends in this area?
- How can GIS&RS services benefit from open source solutions and stimulate development of business-related GIS&RS applications?
The rationale and leading element of the International Information Workshop will be to discuss with a group of experts the issues and topics raised at the preceding International Symposium.
The discussions will be followed by training sessions in working groups, devoted to a further analysis of topics defined during the expert debates.
At the Workshop, working group sessions in computer labs will also take place, with the purpose to discuss the outcomes of the evaluation of available GIS&RS OSS solutions collected on the LIVE CD, and familiarizing with environmental applications that are based on, and/or utilize, GIS&RS OSS.
Both events are being offered to the international GIS community - in particular:
- members of organizations dealing with geo-information (GI);
- scientists;
- small- and medium entrepreneurs;
- representatives of regional self-government authorities;
- staff of institutions involved in implementation of the GMES Programme, including representatives of national GMES offices;
- staff of National Mapping Authorities (NMAs);
- members of the Open Source community
Participation in both events is free of charge. Both events will be held in English.

Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.What message are we sending to senior level decision makers about the importance and value of Spatial Data Infrastructure - SDI - if we keep misrepresenting what SDI is or is all about?
In previous editorials in this magazine I have touched on various SDI issues, especially now that the pan-European SDI has achieved a legally mandated status within the European Union's 27 Member States. Yet I fear that the Geographic Information community - or communities, for there are many - continue to… More…
