Bluesky aerial photo maps Lee Valley Park

Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, London’s largest open space and legacy partner of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, is using Bluesky aerial photography to support a major geographical information system (GIS) project. Used within the Authority’s desktop and Intranet GIS as well as on mobile devices used in the field the high-resolution imagery provides additional information and real world detail, helping to meet statutory obligations, supporting core business functions and the delivery of special projects. In addition to the current aerial photography already being used by the Authority a new survey has been commissioned with Bluesky and will be flown this summer.

“Aerial photography is a fantastic tool for introducing non technical staff to GIS,” said Alex Benstead, Senior GIS Officer. “Using Bluesky’s desktop viewing software staff can easily navigate around the imagery and before they know it they are undertaking simple GIS analysis. In addition the imagery is the perfect compliment to existing map layers and information held with the GIS assisting with both day to day business functions and special projects.”

The Bluesky aerial photography was originally purchased by the Authority to update hand drawn site plans as part of a ground maintenance project. The original drawings were out of date and the detail offered by the imagery enabled accurate measurements and asset details to be recorded for contract negotiations. Now accessed using CadCorp’s desktop and Intranet GIS products the Bluesky aerial photography provides an easy to interpret, real world view of the park complimenting other map layers such as the Authority’s Ordnance Survey mapping, historical aerial photography and height models. The imagery is also loaded onto mobile devices for use in the field.

“The Bluesky aerial imagery is a valuable resource assisting with data capture, survey and asset management applications,” continued Benstead. “The park is facing an exciting yet challenging time and the imagery will help record and manage the parks future development.”

Lee Valley Park stretches 26 miles along the banks of the River Lee, from Ware in Hertfordshire, through Essex, joining the River Thames as the East India Dock Basin. Home to regional sport centres, urban green spaces, heritage sites, country parks and nature reserves the park is a valuable open space resource and will be playing its part to deliver the Olympic and Paralympic Games and facilities that will serve the whole region for generations to come.
