Blom awarded contract by Deutsche Bahn AG

Blom awarded contract by Deutsche Bahn AG

Blom Deutschland, Blom’s German subsidiary, has been awarded a contract by Deutsche Bahn AG, one of the world’s leading passenger and logistics companies operating in 150 countries worldwide, to deliver map data, and create a 3D model of the world heritage Göltzschtal railway viaduct.

Blom will provide tailored topographic maps and digital orthophotos to be used in a project for electrification of the railway track Leipzig – Hof – Nürnberg, and has been exclusively awarded the project to execute all relevant geospatial mapping tasks of the 70 km long section Reichenbach – Hof. The project will be finalized by 2012.

In addition to providing map data, Blom will deliver digital three-dimensional models for use as planning basis for conservation and restoration of historical bridges.

“Being a long-term contractor of the Deutsche Bahn AG for many years Blom Deutschland GmbH is now facing a new and unique challenge, and we are looking forward to execute this exciting project for Deutsche Bahn AG”, says Werner Mayr, Managing Director for Blom Deutschland.

The bridges of Elstertal and Saaletal, as well as the world famous Göltzschtal Viaduct, were built more than 150 years ago. The Göltzschtal Viaduct crosses a 700 m long valley, with trains crossing the Göltzsch valley 70 meters above the ground. An innovative and unique, fully autonomously operating unmanned airborne vehicle with camera, Unmanned Airborne System (UAS), will be used to produce blocks of vertical and oblique aerial photos. Combined with the laser data the aerial photos will be used to create a detailed, textured three-dimensional model of the Göltzschtal Viaduct.

The project will be displayed at the international Intergeo trade show in Karlsruhe, Germany, September 22nd – 24th 2009. Blom will be represented at stand 1.106 in hall 1.
