AARSE 2008 conference announcement

The “Accra Conference" is one of the bi-annual conference which is held under the auspices of the African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE). AARSE was formed in 1992 in USA, and is a registered Regional Member of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) since 1994 and an organizational member of GEOSS. AARSE is also the umbrella organization for all activities in remote sensing and GIS in Africa. One of its primary objectives is to increase the awareness of African governments and their institutions, the private sector and the society at large, about the empowering and enhancing benefits of developing, applying and utilising responsibly, the products and services of Geoinformation Technology. The AARSE Conference is the largest gathering of remote sensing and GIS users in Africa organized by Africans. The conference is a premier forum in Africa which brings together scientists, practitioners, educators, developers and vendors and policy and decision makers to discuss advancements (Latest developments), applications, capacity building and promotion of geo-information technologies in sustainable development of Africa. It is a forum in which participants learn and exchange ideas on the latest advancements in the technologies and their applications in different fields. With more than 1000 members in Africa, AARSE is the continents best known organization and its conference a forum in which space science and technology strategies essential for the continent are discussed

With its sister institution EIS-Africa it is a major co-organizer of all bi-annual AFRICAGIS Conferences. In consistent with its aims, the Association also co-organised other remote sensing activities in Africa and abroad some of which are in cooperation with:

- ISPRS in 1999 in Cotonou, Benin
- ISPRS in 2002 in Dar-es Selaam, Tanzania
- GEOSS Workshop with ISPRS, IEEE, OGC_and the University of Johannesburg in South Africa
and Burkina Faso in 2005 and 2007
- AGIT Conference in 2006, University of Salzburg, Austria
- UNESCO, African Union in 2007, Paris, France
