3D Geo GmbH and ESRI Cooperate

Potsdam, 15.08.2007 - The software developer 3D Geo GmbH, a spin-off of the Hasso Platter-Institute for system technique (HPI), is the new integration partner of ESRI Geoinformatik GmbH, Kranzberg. As a result of this cooperation it will be possible to directly link 3D Geo products to geo-data infrastructure
components of ESRI. This facilitates an easy extension of the current geo-data infrastructure with a 3D visualisation is thus easier.

3D Geo's core competency is the LandXplorer, a content management system for the easy update of complex geo-data sets. It offers extensive functions for the interactive composition and presentation of complex 3D city models. Furthermore it supports the exploration, editing, and analysis of these models. The LandXplorer server is the core of the LandXplorer based geo-data infrastructure, which allows geo-information to be centrally administered, edited, visualised and made available to multiple users.

"We have noted an increased demand for 3D analysing tools, which was also created by the new EU environmental legislation. Through the integration of ArcGIS functionalities in the 3D city model functionality of the LandXplorer
we can meet the expectations of the 3D market entirely." says Gerd Buziek, Director Business Development, ESRI Geoinformatik GmbH.

Continous Process

In future the LandXplorer products, server and studio, will be equipped with an ArcSDE-Interface. The user will experience dramatic improvements in the work flow: The integrated ArcSDE interface solves the time consuming file
based data exchange and offers direct access to GIS data models. ArcSDE is the appliction server of ArcGIS with which spatial data can be efficiently managed in a databank management system by different users. Apart rom saving time, the integration of ArcSDE also increases the security of the system immensely. A file based data exchange always holds the risk of files being corrupted through the multiple and simultaneous
handling of different users. ArcSDE on the other hand is already constructed for multi user handling. Thus the user will be informed about potential conflicts. This effective system is achieved by allocating versions and
archiving, creating a transparent and readily understood file management interface for all users.

The direct link of the LandXplorer server and studio with the geo-data infrastructure components of ESRI allows the user an effective and intelligent update and management of a sustainable 3D city information
space. "Through GIS data managment andGIS functionality in 3D city models we will create new refereces." says Buziek.

Increased Relevance

The seamless integration of the content management system for 3D city models into an existing geo-data infrastructure enhance the growing relevance of 3D city models: "They can do a lot more than just present a city in a nice way to tourists. In future these three dimensional information models will form
the basis for highly complex calculations in technical engineering, which in turn can be presented back to a wider audience in 3D domain." says Marc Hildebrandt, CEO of 3D Geo. Further more solutions from GIS calculations can be presented in an easily understood manner in a 3D world.

The Company

3D Geo GmbH, a spinn-off of the renowned Hasso-Platter-institute, develops and sells software solutions for real-time 3D visualisation, management and delivery of geo-information. The basis of the solution is interactive
geo-documents that integrate 2D and 3D geo-data in dynamic geo-visualisations and allow task and user specific access. On the basis of
integrated digital rights, geo-documents support the controlled and save distribution of the embedded geo-information through all sorts of digital media. The 3D Geo software portfolio provides an easy way to communicate and combine spatial data, support decision making effectively and open up new dimensions of information value in geo-data. The technology of 3D Geo GmbH smoothes entry arriers to use, handle and distribute spatial data and information and reduces induction and allocation costs.

The technology of 3D Geo GmbH makes geo-information accessible in a large scale to the entire community. This allows them to be used in various fields such as education, business and recreation. Typical users are companies,
public agencies, local authorities as well as individual users.

This Month's Burning Issue...
Each month we select a hot topic and a leading figure in the industry to write about it.
This month's burning issue:

What message are we sending to senior level decision makers about the importance and value of Spatial Data Infrastructure - SDI - if we keep misrepresenting what SDI is or is all about?

In previous editorials in this magazine I have touched on various SDI issues, especially now that the pan-European SDI has achieved a legally mandated status within the European Union's 27 Member States. Yet I fear that the Geographic Information community - or communities, for there are many - continue to… More…
