Nearly forty data management professionals converged on Warwick Castle in the heart of England to learn about the latest developments in the use and management of geographic information by UK Emergency Services. The ‘Addressing Issues’ seminar was sponsored by geographic information specialists GGP Systems and is the latest in a series of educational events targeted at the Fire and Rescue Service, Police and Local Government communities.
Representing more than 15 organisations, the delegates learned about the development of the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) and its adoption by UK Emergency Services and shared the real life highs and lows of using gazetteer data. Visitors also saw demonstrations of innovative software designed to facilitate a range of applications including Command and Control, shared services and the FiReControl project.
The recent seminar featured an update on the development of the NLPG from information management specialists, Intelligent Addressing. Operations Director Tony Black explored the Local Government origins of the gazetteer and how these can be built on to deliver tangible benefits to Fire and Rescue services in the UK. Nicola Smith, Business Information Manager at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service went on to present the Business Case they developed to support the introduction of the gazetteer and their real life project experiences.
Pat Porter, LLPG Custodian from award winning local council Tandridge, gave examples of the gazetteer data in action. She presented on the continuous process of data validation and improvement before going on to explain how the Council is working with their local fire and rescue service. Gazetteer Management professionals from event sponsors GGP Systems were also on hand to offer expert advice and demonstrate how software, specially developed for Emergency Services, is being used to improve service delivery.
Some comments from delegates include that the seminar was “informative and enlightening” and the speakers were “enthusiastic and knowledgeable”, adding to an overall beneficial day. On an unseasonably warm day delegates were also encouraged to explore the grounds of Warwick Castle including towers, ramparts, knights, princesses, jousting, and spectacular birds of prey.
The latest Addressing Issues seminar took place on 05 March 2010 at Warwick Castle and further dates and venues will be announced soon.
