Every Map Tells a Story
The last year has seen a flood of OpenData from government which has prompted a new interest in how maps can be used to visualise data and offer understanding of the content. As spatial becomes less special and more open to everyone working on the web an understanding of the underlying data and good practice in how to analyse it and present it has become even more important. The accessibility of a powerful mapping, visualisation and animation tools (particularly on the web) to people who may not have any previous experience of GIS, Cartography or statistical analysis has opened up a raft of new creative and exciting ways of presenting this data that go way beyond a chloropleth. Every map tells a story but not every map delights the user or even tells the truth. On the 25th May the AGI will host “Every map tells a story” at the Centre for Geospatial Sciences at the University of Nottingham. Content will include: •Some exciting and innovative examples of new cartography and visualisation techniques •Geostats 101 - some of the basics of geo statistics and presentation •Working with bad data - OpenData is not always perfect, how can we make the best of it? •The good, the bad and the ugly - a look at some less successful visualisations and an opportunity to discuss how they could be improved This will not be a sit back and listen event, we want you to be participants. •If you have a favourite map that engages the user and gives insight into its content bring it along (digital image or web). Stand up for a minute and tell us why it works, take some feedback from the speakers and other participants and possibly win the AGI’s first “Every map tells a story” Award. •It seems almost certain that someone will want to talk about police.uk, is that you? CPD Please note that as a delegate at this event you can allocate 4 points towards the AGI continuing professional development scheme. More information on the scheme can be found here. Attendance certificates can be requested.
