AGI (Scotland) - Edinburgh Earth Observatory (EEO) Seminar Series We are pleased to announce the following event of the Edinburgh Earth Observatory (EEO)/AGI-Scotland Seminar Series in GIS, Remote Sensing and GeoInformatics.
Prof. Graham Clarke, School of Geography, University of Leeds, will give a talk entitled: ‘Applications of Microsimulation in Human Geography’.
Abstract:
Microsimulation is a methodology for estimating household or individual data sets not normally available to academic researchers. The most popular approach is to reweight survey data to match the characteristics of small-area census tracts. This produces rich new data sets which can then be used for policy 'what-if?' type scenarios. Having briefly discussed methodological issues in the estimation procedures the talk will provide examples of research in socio-economic impact assessment, retail geography, health geography and rural geography, discussing the data created and the future policy scenarios examined.
As usual refreshments in the form of wine, beer and nibbles will be available.

Water in mountain areas. Better observations for better forecastingIt is vitally important to analyze the variabilities of water resources in European mountain systems, to determine how they are linked to social developments and climatic changes.
Water in the form of rain, snow or ice, aquifers or rivers flows, is a valuable indicator of the climates of western Europe. However, there is a great lack of rainfall and snow-water equivalent measurements above an elevation of 2000.
The observations collected in mountain areas will be the main theme of this conference, organized around three main topics:
- Hydro-meteorological observations in mountain areas (state of the art, projects currently underway, perspectives), data sharing;
- Understanding the mountain environment and physical processes and their variability;
- The application of observations, and models for assessing water resources and hazards, with their related uncertainties.
