For the past 12 years, ESA’s Eduspace website has been a window on the world for secondary students and teachers. Now the website has been completely redesigned and updated, so that it provides an even more valuable introduction to Earth observation and its applications.

The European Investment Bank has an annual lending portfolio of around 75 billion euros, operating globally in more than 130 countries. The Bank has been increasingly mainstreaming environmental considerations into its lending portfolio, boosting the need to monitor the impact of the projects it funds. As its environmental commitments have increased, so too has the demand for geospatial information.

Development of non-renewable resources in northern Canada represents one of the most important economic drivers to provide for the well-being of communities in the North and for the benefit of all Canadians. The project - "Operational Delivery of Predictive Regional Geological Mapping Products from Calibrated and Validated EO-derived Data Sources" - which ended in February 2009, investigated a science-based and structured integration of EO data into the corporate geological mapping practices. A measure of success will be the types of published EO-based geological map products.

A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on 12 January, causing major casualties and damage. The quake was followed by several aftershocks with magnitudes over 5.0.

The population of end users who benefit from the use of OGC standards today is global - much to the credit of the growing complement of geospatial technology practitioners in organizations who have been advancing OGC standards as members. As our members envisioned, uptake of OGC standards is now sufficient to make further deployment inevitable. In one user domain after another, "it just makes sense" to extend standards-based Internet and Web resources with geospatial data and processing services. It's not hard. It just requires using software equipped with interfaces that implement OGC's open standards.

Over 500 participants from Russia, CIS and foreign countries gathered at the 4th International Conference “Earth from Space – the Most Effective Solutions” convened on 1-3 December 2009 at the Moscow Region “Vatutinki” recreation centre of the RF President Administration. The organizers of the conference were ScanEx RDC and NGO Transparent World. Sponsors included ImageSat Int. N.V., SPOT Image S.A., Infoterra GmbH, MDA Corporation, e-Geos, and Yandex. Representatives from 270 organizations of 27 countries took part in the conference. The majority of the participants (88%) were from Russia, represented by 40 country regions. Commercial companies outnumber other organizations (36%), followed by government agencies (27%) and scientific and educational institutions (28%).

December 18, 2009, marked the tenth year since the launch of Terra, one of NASA's "flagship" Earth observing satellites. But the decade is more than just a mechanical milestone. With each additional day and year that the satellite monitors Earth, scientists achieve a lengthened record of Earth's vital signs. It's that record that helps scientists assess the health of Earth's ocean, land, and atmosphere, and determine how these systems are changing.

As of 15 December 2009, here is the status of the EU’s INSPIRE Directive, which is designed to build an interoperable, cross-border Spatial Data Infrastructure for the 27 EU Member States. The Directive covers five areas: metadata (creation and publishing), data and services interoperability, network services specifications, monitoring and reporting, and data sharing. While the Directive exists as an official EU legal document, additional legislation is being prepared, in the form of Implementing Rules, covering the specific ways in which the Directive is to be implemented in all Member States. These are published either as Commission Regulations (which take effect immediately) or as Decisions, which may require further legislation on the part of a Member State to implement them.
