For the last ten years, web-based communities have achieved significant advancement in productivity by using collaborative work practices, such as open source software, open standards, and organic data sharing. Open source offers a diverse range of applications which are robust, feature-rich and compliant with current standards. Indeed, the government has publicly recognised its benefits for years. For example, the 2005 release of the Guide to Open Source Software for Australian Government Agencies notes that “[Open Source] has the potential to lead to significant savings in Government.”

Munich, July 25, 2010 - GAF AG, an internationally active geo-information technology and consulting company, announces that it has been awarded by UND-IFAD and ESA with Service Produktion in Western Madagascar. For an area of about 14 000 km² in Western Madagascar, GAF will provide dedicated state of the art EO products which have been customised to meet the specific user requirements of UN-IFAD best possible. Project activities started in June 2010 and will be concluded in November 2010.

Development of non-renewable resources in northern Canada represents one of the most important economic drivers to provide for the well-being of communities in the North and for the benefit of all Canadians. The project - "Operational Delivery of Predictive Regional Geological Mapping Products from Calibrated and Validated EO-derived Data Sources" - which ended in February 2009, investigated a science-based and structured integration of EO data into the corporate geological mapping practices. A measure of success will be the types of published EO-based geological map products.

The population of end users who benefit from the use of OGC standards today is global - much to the credit of the growing complement of geospatial technology practitioners in organizations who have been advancing OGC standards as members. As our members envisioned, uptake of OGC standards is now sufficient to make further deployment inevitable. In one user domain after another, "it just makes sense" to extend standards-based Internet and Web resources with geospatial data and processing services. It's not hard. It just requires using software equipped with interfaces that implement OGC's open standards.
