Geomatics technologies are able to support management and recovery in the aftermath of manmade and natural disasters. However, disaster management also poses big challenges in all aspects of the geo-information cycle, from data acquisition, processing, management and delivery. For the sixth time, the International Symposium on Geo-information for Disaster Management (Gi4DM) brings together researchers, developers, data providers and users from all over the world to discuss these challenges. During a disaster, situational awareness can mean the difference between life and death. Geomatics (satellite and aerial imageries, GPS and mobile devices, GIS and mapping tools, IT technologies) provides reliable and rapid communication, observation and positioning tools, especially when people is in danger and crucial on-the-ground infrastructures are damaged. Risk assessment, disaster mitigation and prevention also benefit greatly from these maps-based data. Nevertheless, potential users worldwide are still facing questions about the existence, availability, accessibility, quality, costs, and timeliness of maps-based information. Apparently, there is still a widespread need for an information gateway to space-based information for disaster management support. As far as mechanisms are in place already for example providing Earth observation data for disaster management, they are restricted to support only response measures in the immediate aftermath of a disastrous event, not covering pre-disaster activities such as mitigation and early warning, or monitoring of slow-onset disasters The world of disaster management and space-based technologies is complex. Knowledge and expertise are widely dispersed. Institutions and practitioners need support, orientation and advice to access and use available data, information, knowledge and services. Gi4DM aims to be a gateway to geographic information for disaster management communities, where methodologies, tools, functionality, and/or interfaces are fully presented and described focusing to real and reliable applications also trying to bridge the gap between the different phases of the disaster management cycle: Planning, Training, Mitigation, Detection, Alerting, Response, Recovery, and Assessment.
